Grandparent Scam Alert Issued In Abington

Abington Police are alerting residents about someone posing as a child or grandchild seeking gift cards or money.

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — The Abington Township Police Department is alerting residents about a scam involving someone posing as a child or grandchild.

Police said the scam exploits love and panic by having someone pretend to be your child or grandchild in crisis.

"Don’t let scammers use your love against you. Stay alert," police said.

Police outlined how the scam works:

  • You get a call, text, or message saying: -"Mom, I’m in trouble — I need money fast!"
  • "Grandma, I was in an accident — please don’t tell anyone."
  • It might even sound like your loved one (AI voice cloning is now a real threat).
  • Then comes the ask: send money now via wire transfer, gift cards, or crypto.

  • Urgent plea for help involving an accident, arrest, or emergency.
  • You're told not to contact anyone else.
  • Request for unusual payment methods (gift cards, Zelle, crypto, etc.).
  • Caller ID may even be spoofed to look familiar.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Hang up — then call your child or grandchild directly.
  • Pause, verify, and ask questions only your loved one would know.
  • Talk with your family before scammers do — create a family password for emergencies.
