Blue Bell, Pa. – At 90, Vernal Richardson has many stories to tell about a life that has seemed surreal at times. So, he decided to do just that. The Blue Bell Place resident recently released the second edition of his book “Far…Beyond the Starry Sky,” which details many remarkable events in his life and how each one – the good and the bad – reinforced his deep spirituality.

One of those events was getting a call to record with a new artist at the time, Roy Orbison, while Richardson was in Nashville playing in the city’s symphony. He took the job, playing violin on Orbison’s first track, “Only the Lonely,” which went on to sell 1 million copies in the first two weeks of its release. After that, Richardson began getting calls from other recording artists like Patsy Cline, Burl Ives, and of course, Orbison for his other popular records.

Late last week, Richardson shared his book and some of his favorite memories and lessons learned with his neighbors and associates at Blue Bell Place, a Watermark Retirement Community. Many attended his book-signing, where he also showcased some of the most famous records he played on – each with its own story behind how it was made.
