Montco Mommy and the Perfect Mother's Day
An unplanned day turns out to be the perfect day to soak up some fun and sun at Great Adventure.
Nothing says Mother’s Day like a fun-filled amusement park, right? Well, it does in my family.
It may not have seemed like the most traditional route, but I only had one request for my holiday this year. I wanted to have no plans.
That seems lame, doesn’t it? But, with our family’s schedule, we have not had a day that was “unplanned” in about six months. We always seem to have a sporting event to get the kids to, work, appointments, social commitments, kids’ birthday parties ... it is endless. I didn’t want to spend our day at the obligatory brunch.

So, when it seemed that our day would be open and free, I put in my request. I wanted to wake up and not have a plan. I wanted to play it by ear—something I’m not entirely great at because my OCD nature means I want to overplan things to death. I wanted to see where the day took us.
And the day took us, all right. It took us to New Jersey.

When I got up, late because they all let me sleep in, I was brought breakfast in bed. After some over-easy eggs and toast, I looked out the window and saw the perfect day ahead of us. The sun was shining; it was breezy and warm, but not too hot.
I thought it was the perfect day to enjoy some family fun.
After some scouting online, we settled on summer passes at Six Flags Great Adventure. We weighed our options, and for our kids’ ages and heights, the price and the drive, we thought it was the best bet.
By purchasing the passes before May 30, we also got free parking all season long, which seemed well worth it to me. We packed our lunch in a cooler, grabbed some sunscreen and were off.
Those who know me would understand how rare this entire day was. I never do things that aren’t planned, and it felt pretty good to be so spontaneous. We had a blast.
Somehow, the moons and stars all aligned, and there were no meltdowns. No one argued. The lines were very quick. Everyone got to hop on the rides they wanted to try.
The day was perfect. We had a lot of very memorable fun. We got to snack on fairground favorites. We rode awesome new rides. But, most of all, I got what I wanted. I got to see smiles on my children’s (OK, and my husband’s) faces. I got to enjoy a day with my kids. I got the perfect Mother’s Day.
