Multi-Car Pileup Closes Both Sides Of Rt. 309 In Montco

UPPER DUBLIN, PA — A pileup of cars on Rt. 309 in Montgomery County closed the roadway in both directions in Upper Dublin Township Thursday morning, according to police and sources. The road was reopened before 8:20 a.m.

Action News reports at least 20 cars were involved in the wreck that closed the road.

Icy conditions were reported around the time of the initial crash, which dispatchers said happened just after 5 a.m.

Cheltenham Township Emergency Management said the crash was caused by an overnight flash freeze.

Officials believe there were four separate crashes, each involving multiple vehicles. According to Fox29, some vehicles were moving up to 80 miles per hour before the crash.

Traffic was backed for several miles up above the Susquehanna Road overpass of both the northbound and southbound lanes, NBC10 said. It began when an accident occurred in the northbound lanes; another crash followed in the southbound lanes.

At least six people were transported from the scene, according to NBC10.

The extent of the injuries was not immediately known.
