Child Killed in School Bullying Incident to be Honored at Phillies Game

12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died from injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident, will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies during their home game against the Red Sox on May 29.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced they will dedicate their home game on May 29 to the memory of 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died as a result of injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident in March.

"We extended the invite to the O'Neill family, and they graciously accepted," said Scott Palmer, Public Affairs Director for the Philadelphia Phillies. "Now we're working on planning out the rest of the day."

Bailey's father, Robert, was overjoyed to hear the news that his son—a staunch Phillies fan—would be honored by his favorite team.

“This is wonderful news, and we’re so thankful for the Phillies to reach out to our family and dedicate a home game to Bailey’s memory," said Robert O'Neill. "It’s so exciting that people want to see this for Bailey. He was such a huge Phillies fan, and this will make him so happy."

A petition filed with Change.org requesting the dedication had collected more than 14,000 signatures prior to the announcement, leading Robert to state that he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.

“The response to our Change.org petition has just been overwhelming," Robert said.

"Last week, there were 1,000 supporters, and within a few days, more than 14,000 people—thousands from Philadelphia—had signed on in. We look forward to working with the Phillies to make sure the game raises awareness about the dangers of bullying and helps educate our youth.”

Robert's son was punched in the head during a violent bullying incident at Darby Township School on January 10. Bailey sustained a fractured nose, a concussion and seizures as a result of the attack, and was placed into a medically induced coma two weeks later, according to a CNN report.

Bailey was taken off life support the following day—one day after his 12th birthday.

According to a report from Philly.com, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said investigators are still piecing together what actually happened, but added that there is a "strong likelihood" that charges will be filed.

Bailey was buried Saturday, March 9, while surrounded by family and friends.
