WHITPAIN, PA — Construction work will begin early next month on a bridge in Whitpain Township, leading to a road closure and detours, PennDOT announced this week.

The Morris Road bridge over the SEPTA tracks, which was built in 1967, will be rehabilitated beginning Monday, Aug. 3, officials said. The bridge carries an average of about 16,000 vehicles a day according to PennDOT.

Morris Road will be shut down between North Wales Road and Tournament Drive 24 hours a day for the duration of the work, which is expected to last until early September.

PennDOT said that work crews will adhere to CDC and Department of Health safety guidelines, including mask-wearing and social distancing.

The detour will take motorists to southbound U.S. 202, Route 73, and Bethel Road. Access for residents will be available up to the construction zone.

Work on the bridge will include repairing joints at both piers and abutments, milling and paving, installing a sloped rock wall, and performing a hydro-demolition of the existing bridge deck.

The project is being financed by the state, with Road-Con Inc. serving as the general contractor.
