Ardmore Avenue Pool Could Close For Summer 2025

With the potential closure of the Ardmore Avenue Pool this year, the township will consider increasing fees for the Belmont Hills Pool.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners Wednesday night will either choose to close a local swimming pool or keep it open.

At a special commissioners' meeting Wednesday night, the board will consider the closure of the Ardmore Avenue Swimmig Pool.

Wednesday's vote on closing the pool comes after a Parks & Recreation Committee meeting last week.

At that meeting, the committee recommend the pool's closure for summer 2025 due to the impacts from construction of the Ardmore Avenue Community Center.

According to the committee, the Ardmore Pool site is a phased construction site throughout the season, the construction schedule has the demolition of the Bathhouse beginning on or about April 9.

The Pennsylvania Bather Code does not allow the operation of a public pool without dedicated shower and toilet facilities, according to the committee. Officials said there is no feasible and safe location to place rental of shower trailers at the pool.

The work will also force interruptions to water and electricity, which are needed for safe pool operation, and create construction debris and activity near the pool.

As a result of the pool's likely closing, the committee recommended increasing the fees for the Belmont Hills Pool

The board Wednesday will also consider raising the Belmont Hills Pool fees by 6.5 percent for Narberth residents only this year. Township residents will not see a fee increase for the pool. Non-residents, other than those from Narberth, will not be accepted at the Belmont Hills Pool should the board approve the recommendation, which was made due to concerns of overcrowding.

With this increase, a family of three from Narberth seeking a seasonal membership would pay $668, and an additional $46 for anyone 21 and under. Anyone 17 and under would pay $258, people 18 and older would have a fee of $309, and senior citizens $52. The committee recommended the board OK an individual "pay as you go" fee of $160, with an additional $6 pool admittance fee.

In person and virtual attendance is permitted at this meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the second floor boardroom of the Lower Merion Township Administration Building, 75 E. Lancaster Ave. in Ardmore.

The proceedings can be viewed live on LMTV, the Township’s government access channel, available on Comcast Cable Channel 7 and Verizon FiOS Channel 37 as well as online here.
