WYNNEWOOD, PA — Famed Philadelphia merchant Isaac Clothier spent his time living in a veritable castle on the Main Line.

630 Clother Road in Wynnewood was the cofounder of Strawbridge & Clothier's home for years before changing hands several times. Clothier sold the property to Agnes Irwin, who then sold the property to St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church.

Now, the church is holding a grand opening for the new event space in the former gymnasium of Agnes Irwin after renovating it during the pandemic.

The church is holding an invite-only grand opening party for event planners and vendors in the region ahead of the coming event season, with Catering By Design providing food, entertainment and more.

"When I got there," Peter Loevy of Catering By Design told Patch, "It was tired and beat up."

The space was home to an event venue for about 30 years before Loevy took over.

After putting a sizable amount of money into the renovations, Clothier Hall opened in September 2021, but permitting issues prevented a full opening.

Now, Loevy said, with the proper permits and zoning in place with Lower Merion Township and making good with neighbors in the area, Clothier Hall is ready to become the Main Line's newest, high-end event space.

The space is a Catering by Design exclusive venue and features a 3,700 square foot ballroom with a dance floor, a 900 square foot bar and cocktail area with an outdoor patio that's tented six months out of the year, plenty of free off-street parking, a stage rigged for audio and visual presentations, an in-house kitchen, a wedding suite, and more.

The space can fit 270 people for both seated dinner and standing cocktail events. The capacity is capped at 250 people if the event includes an open dance floor. Meanwhile, the patio can host 230 people for a seated ceremony, 150 for a seated dining event, and 250 people for a standing reception.

"I had lots of fun designing it," Loevy said.

The grand opening party will be held Jan. 29 and feature passed hors d'oeuvres and stationed foods, a bar serving up seasonal cocktails, lounge areas, and dueling pianos for entertainment.

While the grand opening is invitation only, Loevy said the space is always open for tours to prospective clients.

Loevy wants to make Clothier Hall a go-to venue for weddings, Mitzvahs, corporate events, and more in the Philadelphia region.

"Its in a great position," he said of the space situated just off Lancaster Avenue and Wynnewood Road in Wynnewood.
