Ground Broken on New Bryn Mawr Acme

The much larger supermarket is due to open next March.

Construction began Tuesday afternoon on the new Acme supermarket at 601 Lancaster Avenue in Bryn Mawr.

The store closed last week, and has a targeted reopening date of March 2012. The new building, slated to be one of Acme Markets' flagship stores, is going to be more than 37,000 square feet—more than a third larger than the current store, according to the company.

The store is expanding onto neighboring property that used to be a Jaguar dealership, which has already been mostly demolished.

Management wants the new store to focus on "delivering premium customer service,” the company says, and will be redesigning to compete with other supermarkets in healthy and prepared foods.

More than 35 shade trees and a number of plantings will be added, and parking will increase by 20 percent. Warminster, Pa.-based Northwood Construction Co. is the projec's developer.
