Substance Abuse Topic Of Upcoming Discussion By Lower Merion Schools

Attendees will learn about current youth substance use trends, such as vaping, and the dangers of use to the developing brain and body.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Lower Merion School District's ongoing parent education series will focus on substance abuse in the next installment.

The Interschool Council and the district's Student Services Department will host "Substance Abuse Prevention & Resources & Education" from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 on Zoom.

Cordes Symmes, Student Assistance Program Specialist at the Caron Treatment Center, will lead the discussion.

"Inspired by his personal journey of recovery, Symmes is passionate about substance abuse prevention and understands the profound impact substance abuse can have on individuals and their families," the district said. "He has extensive expertise in recognizing emerging trends and providing support to adolescents and parents alike."

Attendees will learn about current youth substance use trends, such as vaping, and the dangers of use to the developing brain and body, as well as review the importance of establishing clear rules and consequences at home regarding substance use.

The discussion's goal is to evaluate resiliency factors that help protect kids from substance us, and empower attendees with effective communication skills in talking with children about alcohol, nicotine and other drug use.
