Is Prospect-Streets Run Intersection Safe?

This video shows just what Baldwin Council was talking about.

A recent widening of the roadway relieved some traffic congestion at the Prospect Road-Streets Run Road intersection in Baldwin Borough, but it also created a different problem.

The Baldwin Borough Council, at the request of Councilman Michael Stelmasczyk, came to an informal consensus this past week that they will ask the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to review Prospect-Streets Run so as to improve the intersection's safety.

At issue is the amount of motorists making right turns at the intersection from one part of Streets Run to the other. Many of these motorists—perhaps most—use the striped area of the roadway to make that right turn rather than stay within the legal traffic lines. And some of these motorists do not wait for the vehicle in front of them to move, putting drivers hoping to turn left from Prospect onto Streets Run in danger.

Stelmasczyk mentioned the right-turn situation at July 9's council meeting, but one member of the public in attendance at the meeting complained that allowing motorists to make the right turn without having to stop is the real problem.

What do you think? The video above—shot on Friday at around 4 p.m.—shows two vehicles within 40 seconds of each other not waiting for the vehicle in front of them to move before making a right onto Streets Run. Is that dangerous enough to warrant a review? What about eliminating the no-stop right turn?
