Holy Family Women’s Sports Update

Tennis

The Holy Family University women’s tennis team returned to action for the first time since the fall season and defeated East Stroudsburg University, 6-3, in a non-conference match at the Torresdale-Frankford Country Club Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Holy Family is now 10-3 overall this season, while East Stroudsburg is now 3-3 overall.

Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, March 29 as the Tigers play host to Division-I La Salle University.  Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Lacrosse

The Holy Family University women’s lacrosse team fell short to cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 18-15, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Tiger Field Saturday afternoon.

Holy Family is now 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the CACC, while Philadelphia improves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, March 30 as the Tigers travel to face Wilmington University in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m.

Softball

The Holy Family University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Queens College Sunday afternoon.  The Knights took the first game by the score of 6-4, while the Tigers recorded a 3-0-shutout victory in game two.

With the split, Holy Family is now 3-11 overall, while Queens is now 7-7 overall.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, March 23 as the Tigers open conference play hosting cross-town rival Philadelphia University.  The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m.

Basketball

Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) can now add All-American to her prolific playing career as she was recently named to the NCAA Division II State Farm Coaches’ All-America team as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The ten-member team was selected by a vote of the selection committee that is comprised of one representative from each of the eight geographical regions and a chairperson.

Carr, who earned Honorable Mention All-America honors last season as a junior, is the first women’s basketball player in Holy Family history to receive NCAA All-America accolades.

“I am really proud and happy for her with this honor,” said head coach Mark Miller.  “She worked very hard the past four years to be put in this position.  She had a great career and to highlight it like this is a great way to go out.  This is a great accomplishment for her.”

All-American honors top the list of postseason accolades that Carr has received this season.  She was selected to the All-CACC first team for the third straight season and her fourth overall All-CACC selection this year.  Carr also received CACC All-Tournament honors and was named to the Daktronics All-East Region first team.  During the course of the season, she was named CACC Player of the Week twice and was named the conference’s Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of December.

“It’s an honor I’m very pleased with,” said Carr on being named an All-American.  “It’s a great accomplishment to receive and to be nominated for.  When Coach Miller told me I was kind of speechless.”

Carr put together a record-breaking season this year as she finished her four-year career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,995 career points.  Carr broke Debbie Schopfer's 20-year record of 1,928 career points during the semifinals of the CACC Tournament.  Earlier in the year, Carr also set the new standard for most career field goals made.  She finished up with 767 career field goals.

This season, Carr averaged a team best 16.4 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest.  She also recorded 34 steals and had 13 blocked shots.

The four-time All-CACC selection helped lead Holy Family to its fourth straight CACC South Division Regular Season Title and 11th overall.  The conference switched to division play beginning with the 2007-2008 season. 

The Tigers advanced to the CACC Championship Final and also earned their eighth straight NCAA Tournament bid.  Holy Family earned the second seed in the East Regional and advanced to the regional semifinals for the sixth consecutive year.  Holy Family wrapped up the 2010-11 season with a 24-5 overall record.
