Chestnut Hill, Mt Airy Among The Most Walkable Areas: Philly Mag

CHESTNUT HILL-MT AIRY, PA — Driving in and around Philadelphia can be a rage-inducing act.

From double parkers to lookieloos, texters to tailgaters, long traffic lights to speeders, hitting the road comes with its fair share of annoyances.

Which is why many people travel on foot.

With that in mind, Philadelphia Magazine released its list of "The Most Walkable Philadelphia Suburbs and Neighborhoods."

And Chestnut Hill and Mt Airy were among the top walkable neighborhoods.

The magazine looked at various suburbs and neighborhoods to determine a "walk score" for each.

According to the magazine, walk scores measure the walkability of any address and awards points based on the distance to amenities like grocery stores, schools, parks, restaurants and shops.

Chestnut Hill earned a score of 92 out of a possible 100.

Here is what makes Chestnut Hill great, according to the magazine:

Chestnut Hill may be one of the city’s most homogenous neighborhoods, but you wouldn’t get that impression strolling along Germantown Avenue: Its business district draws shoppers from all races and all parts of Northwest Philly, and some of the most distinctive local businesses are Black-owned, including the Spice Rack, Breakfast Boutique and Style by Blain.

Mt. Airy got a 78 walkability score out of a possible 100.

Though it’s internally split into East and West, with East not as affluent as West, this neighborhood comes together as one along Germantown Avenue. Places serving as uniters include the Free Library’s recently restored and rejuvenated Lovett Memorial­ branch and McMenamin’s, the lively neighborhood pub.

Other nearby Neighborhoods that were on the list include Germantown, Fishtown, and East Passyunk.
