Mt. Airy Transportation Activist Dies In Center City Crash

John Peter Javsicas was tragically killed after a vehicle jumped a curb and struck a newsstand in Center City on June 13.

CHESTNUT HILL, PHILADELPHIA – A local man who was an advocate for public transportation and increased transportation safety was tragically killed after a vehicle jumped a curb in Center City last week.

John Peter Javsicas, 76, of West Mt. Airy, died Tuesday, June 13 after a vehicle crashed into a newsstand in Center City on the same day.

Philly.com reports he founded Pennsylvanians for Transportation Solutions Inc. in 2002 and served as its executive director until 2014, in which advocated for greater transportation safety and increased public transportation.

Javsicas also was a strong proponent for Pennsylvania's Act 89, which helps fund public transportation projects in the state, according to Philly.com.

The crash that led to Javsicas' untimely and ironic death happened at about 11:43 a.m. at 16th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard on June 13.

A van struck an SUV, which then struck a newsstand that struck Javsicas. He died later that evening at Hahnemann University Hospital.
