Police responding to the call found Smith wounded inside the home. He was taken to UPMC Cranberry and then transported to Allegheny General Hospital on Pittsburgh's North Side, where he died a short time later.

Hughes told police Smith had punched her in the face and head before she got her gun out of her purse. Ken Haber, Hughes’ attorney, called the shooting a classic case of self defense, the Cranberry Eagle reported.
