New Superintendent Appointed At School District Of Haverford Township

The School District of Haverford Township Thursday appointed Dr. Matthew C. Hayes as the district's new superintendent.

HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, PA — The School District of Haverford Township Board of School Directors have chosen a new superintendent to lead the district.

Dr. Matthew C. Hayes was appointed Superintendent of Schools for the School District of Haverford Township at a specially scheduled school board meeting on Thursday.

"Dr. Hayes brings an exceptional blend of strategic leadership, student-centered innovation, and a deep commitment to educational excellence," Board President Dr. Latanya King said. "His proven ability to improve teacher retention, enhance curriculum development, and drive measurable student achievement will be invaluable to the School District of Haverford Township."

Hayes is a respected educational leader with a proven track record of driving student success, strategic problem-solving, and fostering community engagement, according to the district.

As a Regional Superintendent for Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida, he played a key role in improving teacher retention by implementing innovative staffing models including diverse hiring strategies that reduced vacancies and strengthened workforce stability, the district said.

His leadership in curriculum development and professional learning communities led to measurable student achievement gains, including double-digit proficiency improvements in core subjects.

Recognized for his ability to lead transformational change, Hayes prioritizes collaboration, accountability, and data-driven decision-making to create an environment where both students and educators thrive, according to the district.

Hayes has been deeply committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within schools, ensuring that every student and staff member feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. He recognizes that DEI is not just a framework but a fundamental pillar of academic excellence, student achievement, and workplace inclusivity, the district said.

Hayes brings a wealth of experience in school leadership, student achievement, and community engagement.

As Principal of Roosevelt K-8 Elementary School in Philadelphia, he successfully closed achievement gaps, oversaw major facility renovations, and forged impactful partnerships with the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to expand student support services, the district said.

His dedication to school-community relationships and equity earned him district-wide recognition. Prior to this role, he served as Assistant Principal at Manheim Township Middle School, where he led student support initiatives, improved academic performance, and contributed to special and gifted education programs, fostering a collaborative school culture, according to the district.

Hayes began his career as a middle and high school teacher in Philadelphia and North Carolina, where he developed a strong foundation in curriculum design, instruction, and student engagement. His ability to drive academic excellence, build meaningful community partnerships, and develop future leaders continues to define his approach to education.

"With his track record of fostering collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and accountability, along with his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Hayes is well-positioned to lead the School District of Haverford Township toward greater academic excellence and innovation" Kristin Larsen, Board Vice President, said.

Hayes earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Coastal Carolina University; his Master of Education Degree from Cabrini University; PA School Superintendent PK-12 Letter of Eligibility from St. Joseph’s University; and his Doctor of Education from Cabrini.

Hayes is a firm believer in the power of school-community partnerships, lifelong learning, and leadership continuity as essential foundations for success.

Alongside his wife, Sarah, and son, Beaudie, he looks forward to becoming an active member of the Haverford Township community.
