Some Horsham Township Police Officers Will Wear Blue Badges In April For Autism Awareness

Horsham Police Department says that some of its officers will spend time in school autism support classrooms to learn about autism.

HORSHAM, PA — Members of the public may notice some unique police badges on the hips and uniforms of some Horsham Township officers this month.

Horsham says that some of its officers will be wearing special blue colored police badges in April as way to honor those living with autism.

During April, some local law enforcement officers also plan to spend time with the autistic support teachers at Simmons Elementary School as a way to familiar police with autism spectrum disorder, according to the department.

"This will help officers become more familiar with people with autism in the school, and so that when they encounter them in the community, they can be supportive," Horsham Police stated in a social media post.

The Horsham Township Police and Fire Departments also announced that it will be hosting specialized training for their members and surrounding agencies so first responders can be better prepared when dealing with members of the public who have autism.

The month of April is considered to be World Autism Month, which began this past Saturday with World Autism Awareness Day.
