Snapshot: Lower Providence’s Sept. 11 Memorial
Lower Providence Township placed a memorial wreath at its Sept. 11 memorial to recognize the event's 11th anniversary.
Lower Providence Patch paid a visit to the Lower Providence Township Sept. 11 Memorial, where the township placed a memorial wreath, honoring the 3,000 innocent lives lost during the terrorist attacks, eleven years ago.
The memorial is located in front of the, besides the township’s war memorial.
“To me it represents freedom,” Richard Brown, Lower Providence Board of Supervisors chairman said. “That’s what was attacked that day, our freedom and values in our country.”

According to Brown, who is also a Korean War veteran, the township’s Sept. 11 memorial was erected and dedicated last year for the event’s tenth anniversary.
Although Brown was unable to attend the three-hour long dedication ceremony, he said that he was moved when he saw it via a taped recording, which the township currently has copies available.

A page on the Lower Providence Township website describes it as, “A special place of reflection, remembrance and renewal, honoring the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001.”
The website described the memorial's creation as an undertaking made possible through a partnership between the residential and business communities. It was designed by Architectural Concepts of West Chester and Wade Associates of Harrisburg.
The website also explains the township’s reason for creating its Sept. 11 Memorial:
“While on the surface Lower Providence Township may seem far removed from New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pa., the events that took place at each site have deeply affected our community and must never be forgotten.”
The memorial, as described on its plaque, is made up of three artistic representations of the events occurring that day:
- “The two towers honor those who perished at the World Trade Center in New York City.”
- “A five-sided reflection pool, which pays tribute to the fallen at the Pentagon in Washington D.C.”
- “The 40-step water feature honors the 40 passengers of Flight 93 lost at Shanksville, Pennsylvania.”
The plaque continues on to read:
“We grieve for the fallen, pray for the wounded and keep all affected by the attacks close within our hearts today, tomorrow and forevermore.”
