New Hockey Arena Proposed For Pittsburgh Area

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA — Robert Morris University has proposed building a $28 million arena that would be used by its Division 1 men and women's hockey teams.

The building would be housed on campus on a location that has not been disclosed. It would seat 2,500 spectators, about twice the capacity of where the teams play their games currently - Clearview Arena in the RMU Island Sports Center in Neville Island.

Robert Morris has filed a state grant request to fund a portion of the project and is launching a fundraising campaign to pay for the remainder.

The 100,000-square-foot development also would be made available to youth and amateur hockey players.

"This strategic initiative represents a blending of our pursuit of competitive excellence with our ongoing commitment to serving the needs of the greater community," Chris King, the university's vice president and athletics director, said in a statement.

Barring any stumbling blocks, the arena could be completed by the summer of 2027, according to the university.
