Child Nearly Drowns at Baierl Family YMCA
In response, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh suspended swimming at all 22 of its summer day camps.
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that swimming is suspended at all 22 of its summer day camps because a 6-year-old almost drowned last month on a field trip from Carson Middle School to the Baierl Family YMCA.
Each camp site must be inspected and approved before it can resume swimming.
The swimming ban started Tuesday after the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare notified YMCA officials that it needed to shut down the program the child was enrolled in at Carson Middle School. Camp counselors were not able to correctly or quickly identify their assigned campers, according to the report.
