North Hills Musicians Invited to Noted Collegiate Invitational

North Hills School District woodwind musicians are one of only two high school ensembles chosen to play in the seventh annual Youngstown State University Wind and Percussion Invitational and receive instruction from the university’s noted Dana School of Music professors. 

The daylong event will be held on Feb. 22 in the university’s Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, Ohio. North Hills High School Wind Ensemble members will learn from college-level faculty in master classes for woodwind, brass and percussion instruments and perform in a concert featuring Lakeview High School Symphonic Band and Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble.

The three groups will combine to play a rousing rendition of “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa during the concert.

“All of the students in the two groups will benefit from the collaborative effort of all the musicians and directors involved,” said Stephen Gage, Youngstown State University’s director of bands and music professor. 

 “The North Hills High School bands and your outstanding musicians and teacher and conductor Len Lavelle have long been among western Pennsylvania’s finest wind bands. Congratulations to you for setting such a high bar of musical excellence for so many years.” 

The district’s woodwind ensemble consists of 48 musicians in grades 9 to 12. All ensemble members are selected through an audition process.
