North Hills Vocalists Selected for Landmark Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Concert Event

Nearly 120 North Hills students will be among the more than 2,500 area singers from throughout the area performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

North Hills High School Symphonic and Women’s Choirs will join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as it opens the inaugural Music for the Spirit Festival in grand fashion with Singing City, a large-scale, historic concert event at the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center on April 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Nearly 120 North Hills students will be among the more than 2,500 area singers from throughout the area performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director Manfred Honeck. Singers include vocalists from more than 62 professional choirs, university choirs, high school choirs and members of religious-affiliated choirs. North Hills is one of only nine area high schools slated to perform in the event.

Singers also will have an opportunity to learn from Honeck and Robert Page, former director of Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University professor and director of choral activities.

Repertoire highlights of the show will include the chorale finale of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" as well as the world premiere of a newly commissioned work for a cappella choir by Pittsburgh native Jonny Priano.

The 2013 Music for the Spirit Festival will be a citywide series of special concerts and events. Singing City celebrates the power of music to promote and spread a universal and spiritual message. This is the first time since 1996 that a gathering this large was organized to perform in the area by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
