Electric Bikes Pose 'Significant Safety Risk' In Montco: Police
Teens have increasingly been riding recklessly around the area on bikes they don't have the experience to handle, police said.

UPPER PROVIDENCE, PA — Authorities in Upper Providence are warning the public about teenagers riding electric bikes on area roads and trails, citing "significant safety risks" in recent behavior.
The warning comes a few weeks after a highly publicized incident involving a group of teens at Black Rock Park. It hasn't been the only one.

"While e-bikes are a convenient mode of transportation, they can pose significant safety risks when young riders are not properly supervised or following necessary safety guidelines," Chief Mark Freeman shared.
Freeman says that many young riders don't have the experience or judgement to handle the high speeds which the bikes quickly reach. They also struggle to recognize how to interact with traffic and the dangers posed by motor vehicles, pedestrians, and other cyclists.

Younger riders can be reckless on trails and have trouble navigating tight spaces, particularly when there are other users.
The police department will recommend to the Board of Supervisors that the township adopt an ordinance to regulate the use of electric bikes. It's not yet clear exactly what the ordinance will look like.
"Please have a conversation with your children about the importance of safe E-bike riding, and always supervise them to help prevent accidents," Freeman said. "Together, we can work to ensure a safer environment for all residents."
Children should always wear helmets and stay within designated bike lanes and designated bike trails, avoiding high speed roadways and trails marked exclusively for pedestrians.
