Truck Spill Closes Egypt Road for Most of Day

The fluid is is a vegetable oil product used for lubrication, the report states. It went into soil, storm drain but not Perkiomen Creek.

Lower Providence Township released the following information:

A lubricant leaking from a tractor trailer caused unsafe road conditions Friday morning, forcing the closure of all four lanes of Egypt Road in Upper Providence Township.
Lower Providence Township Fire Marshal Charles A. DeFrangesco observed the liquid leaking out of the trailer compartment of the vehicle at approximately 9:16 a.m. as it traveled south on Park Avenue near Eagleville Road.

DeFrangesco conducted a traffic stop on Egypt Road at New Mill Road in Upper Providence Township. The driver told DeFrangesco that he was aware of the unsecure load having noticed it leaking while at a business in Eagleville. The tractor trailer is owned by Volpe Express. The truck did not carry a hazardous material placard.

According to DeFrangesco, the bill of lading identified the liquid as a myritor-312, a vegetable oil product used for lubrication. It is non-hazardous, but could be harmful to wildlife.

At the stop, the product was deposited on the road, resulting in the closure of all four lanes of Egypt Road because of unsafe conditions. The substance migrated inside a storm drain and into soil, but did not enter the Perkiomen Creek.

Responding to the scene were HAZMAT/Montgomery County Department of Public Safety; Black Rock Fire Company out of Upper Providence Township; the Department of Environmental Protection; PA State Police Truck Inspection Unit; PennDOT and the safety officer from Volpe.
Public Works crews from Lower and Upper Providence townships assisted with the cleanup. The roadway was cleared by 2 p.m.
