Peters is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Peters has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Peters Township burst onto the Pennsylvania map in 1781, standing proud as one of Washington County's original 13 townships. Before joining the Keystone State, the area was under Virginia's jurisdiction.
- The township celebrates community spirit with the annual Peters Township Community Day. Held at Rolling Hills Park, this event brings together families for a day of games, food and fireworks, showcasing the tight-knit community atmosphere that defines Peters.
- The township's iconic arrowhead logo, a nod to local heritage, came into existence alongside the new Home Rule Charter in 1976. Created by Robert Chamberlain, the design takes inspiration from an actual arrowhead discovered in Peters Township.
- Peters Lake Park is a local favorite for fishing, kayaking and picturesque walks. Nestled within the township, this park offers a tranquil retreat with its beautiful lake and trails, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and outdoor activities.
- In the 1800s, the first educational facility in Peters Township was established in a log cabin farm residence, funded by the students’ parents. Free public education was introduced to the community in 1835, significantly expanding access to education for the area's farming families.
