Pleasant Valley Elementary Celebrates National Blue Ribbon Award

Last September, was named a Title I Distinguished School by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and awarded a National Blue Ribbon.

Last November, PV principal Mike Fisher and teacher Traci Stunek traveled to Washington, D.C., to receive the building’s award.

This past Friday, a celebration was held for students, parents, faculty and staff.

Peters Township School Board President was in attendance, as well as vice president Lori Cuervo, members Bill Merrell and Sandy Gregg, and assistant to the superintendent .

told the students how "humbling and honoring (it is) to see that the nation sees what we've seen all along.

"PV is truly a National Blue Ribbon school," she said. 

Peters juvenile Officer Dave Stanton and fire Deputy Chief Noel "Mac" McMullen sat proudly in the front row, and were commended by Principal Fisher for "making Peters Township a better place to live."

Township Manager Mike Silvestri was also praised, although not in attendance.

Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi congratulated the students on their hard work.

Sen. John Pippy's Chief of Staff Matt Campion, and Rep. Tim Murphy's Field Director Nate Nevala both attended the assembly.

Three students fondly reflected on their time spent at PV. One student recalled "walking into school with a smile and coming home from school with a smile."

He joked of the rivalry between the PV Pandas and the Bumblebees, with one last message for the bees: "You'd better get buzzing," he advised.

Steely McBeam zipped through the school's gym entertaining the crowd.

A series of videos starring students celebrating their accomplisments played—one class wittyfully replaced Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" with "We Got the Blue Ribbon."

Fisher announced that the PV students read 3,556 books in two weeks—yes, two weeks.

This Friday, one student will paint Fisher's hair blue, as he lost the book-reading bet. Stay tuned!
