Simmons Farm Wins Third Calla Lily Award
Purple Magilla Perilla, hearty sweet potato vine and leafy coleus are just a few reasons the Lexington Garden Club awarded the farm.
Pumpkins and cornstalks arranged at the entrance of invite patrons this time of year. As do purple Magilla Perilla, hearty sweet potato vine and leafy coleus—among other colors and varieties—for which the farm was awarded the third Calla Lily Award of the year, and the first in its honor.
Last week, Lexington Garden Club member Kathy Tomamichel presented the award to Jan Simmons, who was thrilled.
“We’re excited,” she said. “We work hard to keep it nice.”

Simmons is married to Scott, a son of the original owner, but has been working at the farm since she was a student at .
The white Calla Lily plaque is staked among pumpkins, squash, basil, hardy mums, a bale of hay and a handcrafted scarecrow.

Sitting contently on a warm October day was Sidney (Crosby), the family’s chocolate lab.
Named after the hockey star, Sidney lounges outside enjoying the abundant landscape and fall décor.
“It’s so nice to be recognized,” said Simmons. “We try hard to make it beautiful.”
A diluted solution of fertilizer and water keeps the flowers vibrant, she said.
Dragon Wing Begonias, creeping Black-Eyed Susan and Persian Shield canopy the archways of the market’s porch, where a myriad of homegrown produce lies—including seasonal gourds and Indian corn.
Potted basil sneaks its way out of the verdant plants deserving of the award.
Step inside the market and you’ll be just as impressed.
Jams, jellies, brilliantly hued vegetables and pies galore are just a few items that fill the store. Among those, are hand-painted pumpkins adorned with Steelers and Penguins logos.
Currently, customers can pick their own apples and pumpkins. And did you know the farm reserves a perfect space for kids’ birthday parties?
