Plastic Bag Ban On The Agenda In Phoenixville

The ban is expected to be approved at the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA —Phoenixville Borough Council is expected to vote Tuesday night on an ordinance to ban plastic bags and straws from retail establishments, effective March 2024, to protect the environment.

The purpose of the ordinance is to reduce the environmental impact of single-use bags and plastic straws.
A commercial establishment may make bags available to customers for 10 cents, under the proposed ordinance.

The ban is expected to begin on Feb. 29, 2024.

Failure to abide by the new ordinance could result in a fine of up to $250 for the first offense, and up to $500 for the second violation within a year of the first violation.

Borough manager, E. Jean Krack said announcements are being sent to the residents and will be included in borough newsletters.

Nearby municipalities have implemented a ban on plastic bags including West Chester, Tredyffrin, Easttown, and other municipalities.

Store owners are expected to provide a sign notifying shoppers of the cost of a bag.

The borough manager noted that some businesses have already stopped using plastic bags.
