The ban is expected to be implemented in March 2024.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA Phoenixville Borough Council this week introduced an ordinance to ban plastic bags and straws from retail establishments, effective March 2024, to protect the environment.

Nearby municipalities have implemented a ban on plastic bags including West Chester, Tredyffrin, Easttown and other municipalities.

The proposed ordinance allows businesses to provide recyclable bags to residents for 10 cents.

The residents are expected to provide a sign notifying shoppers of the cost of a bag.

Failure to abide by the new ordinance could result in a fine of up to $250 for the first offense, and up to $500 for the second violation within a year of the first violation.

Council members noted that there are paper straws that can be used instead of plastic straws to drink beverages.

The borough manager noted that some businesses have already stopped using plastic bags.
