1 Dead After Vehicle Plunges Off Pittsburgh Parkway Bridge

The fatal crash caused traffic restrictions on the parkway.

PITTSBURGH, PA — One person died Friday morning after a car apparently plunged off of the Parkway East outbound near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.

Police, fire, EMS and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office were on the scene below the parkway on Commerical Street in Swisshelm Park, where the car landed in a creek in the Nine Mile Run section of Frick Park.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. The vehicle apparently went off of the parkway's Commercial Street Bridge and rolled down a hillside before landing in a creek.

The parkway outbound was reduced to a single lane of traffic at the tunnel for several hours, but PennDOT said the road reopened to unobstructed traffic around 11 a.m.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash.
