AccuWeather 2025 Spring Forecast: See Pittsburgh Predictions Here

See what State College-based AccuWeather thinks is in store for spring here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — If you're weary of winter weather, you probably will not like what AccuWeather is predicting for spring. The State College-based meteorological service released its spring forecast on Wednesday and it calls for winterlike temperatures lingering well into the spring in the Pittsburgh area and parts of the interior Northeast and Great Lakes states.

That's because the coldest January across the country since 2011 allowed more ice to form on the Great Lakes. The extensive ice cover likely will suppress temperatures in the season's first weeks.

“Spring is a season of change, and it will feel like a temperature roller coaster ride for millions of people this year,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said. “Winter will overstay its welcome in parts of the Northeast."

The lingering cold air could present problems for farmers and gardeners, as AccuWeather predicts the last frost could occur days or even weeks later than the historical average in some areas. In Western Pennsylvania, the last frost typically occurs around May 1, according to the weather service.

The cooler air and cold waters in the Great Lakes will help minimize severe weather downwind of the Lakes across the Ohio Valley and the Northeast during the first half of spring, until temperatures rise and the potential for severe weather increases as May approaches.
