Another Shuttered Pittsburgh Movie Theater To Reopen

For the second time in less than a week, plans have been announced to reopen another closed Pittsburgh neighborhood movie theater.

DORMONT, PA — The shuttered Hollywood Theater will reopen next month and be operated by the owner of the Row House Cinemas in Lawrenceville.

Owner Brian Mendelssohn made the announcement Tuesday on the Row House Cinemas Facebook page.

"Our team is honored to be a part of the next chapter of the almost 100-year-old movie house’s history," he stated. "We have some really fun stuff planned for the rest of 2023."

News of Row House Hollywood's impending opening comes less than a week after Mendelsshohn revealed plans to refurbish and reopen the Dennis Theater in Mt. Lebanon in a partnership with The Dennis Theatre Foundation.

According to the Cinema Treasures website, the Hollywood is the last of three theaters that once stood Dormont. PA. The building was first constructed in 1925 and has undergone one major reconstruction and several renovations.

With many owner and operator changes over the years, the Potomac Avenue theater's doors have been shut for a total of 17 years. The theater most recently went dark last year.

The Hollywood will have a free open house on Oct. 1 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Movies with local ties will be shown and there will be a $1 poster sale. No tickets are required.

According to the Hollywood's website, the theater will sreen "Donnie Darko" with director Richard Kelly on Oct. 21. On Oct. 28, the Hollywood will have a "Zombie Fest," featuring a lineup of classic zombie films such as "Night of the Living Dead," and "Shaun of the Dead."

November screenings include "Mullholland Drive" on Nov. 4 and "Repo: The Genetic Opera" on Nov. 11. A Nov. 25 Sci-Fi Fest will feature "Terminator 2," "Escape From New York," "Spaceballs" and other films.
