The new East Liberty Market District anchors The Meridian—36K sq. ft. of groceries, cafés, a pharmacy & neighborhood energy.

The new Market District store at the former Shakespeare Street Giant Eagle site in East Liberty is scheduled to open in November 2025.
The store is part of The Meridian, a major mixed-use development at the corner of Penn and Shady Avenues. According to the official Meridian website, the new Market District will be a 36,000-square-foot upscale grocery store anchoring the retail portion of the complex.

This new Market District replaces the original Giant Eagle that closed in July 2022. The redevelopment aims to provide a more vibrant, walkable, and community-oriented space in East Liberty.
