Community Supermarket in Harrison Township Has Closed After 23 Years
After serving Harrison Township for more than two decades, the Community Supermarket in the Heights Plaza Shopping Center is No Longer Open
The Community Supermarket's clearance sale began October 10, and by the third week of the month, shelves were emptied and doors locked. The closure leaves nearby residents — particularly seniors in the local high-rises and those without transportation — with few nearby grocery options.
The nearest full grocery store, Giant Eagle at 1710 Pacific Avenue in Harrison Town Center, is about 2.2 miles away, roughly a 45–50-minute walk. That walk would be challenging for seniors, especially in winter or with groceries in hand. Bus routes in the area are limited, which makes services like ACCESS Transportation or store delivery and curbside pickup essential alternatives.
Longtime residents recall when the plaza was lively with stores like Macy’s and Big Lots — but over time, the anchors that once defined Heights Plaza have steadily disappeared.

Still, alternatives exist. Seniors and residents who don’t drive can take advantage of the ACCESS Transportation System, which provides affordable, door-to-door rides across Allegheny County.
Many retailers are also expanding their pickup and delivery options through Giant Eagle, Aldi, Walmart, Instacart, and Flashfood — helping residents stay connected to essential groceries without the long walk.

The closure marks the end of an era for Heights Plaza, but Pittsburghers continue to adapt — one ride, one delivery, and one neighborhood at a time.
