The closure plan, announced Wednesday in an earnings release, comes amid a turbulent time in the restaurant industry. Well-known chains such as TGI Fridays, Applebee's and Red Lobster have closed hundreds of locations between them, with Red Lobster filing for bankruptcy last May.

Denny's did not reveal a specific list of locations that will close. But company officials said some of the diners closing have expiring leases, are more than 30 years old and too expensive to remodel because of their age, or have become unprofitable because of their location.
