Fire Damages Pittsburgh-Area High School

A blaze broke out Monday afternoon in a Pittsburgh-area high school auditorium.

WEST MIFFLIN, PA — A fire damaged the West Mifflin Area High School auditorium Monday, forcing the school to transition to remote learning today.

West Miflin School District officials said in a statement that the fire, which began after the school day had ended, started by an outside contractor's lift that was left plugged in to charge overnight. The lift caught fire while charging and damaged part of the auditorium wall and floor.

The fire was quickly extinguished. No injuries were reported.

"While the WMAHS building remains structurally safe, the odor from the fire requires us to shift to a remote learning day for clean-up and air quality improvement," Superintendent Jeffery Soles said. "Please note that only the high school is affected, and that all other district schools will operate normally."
