Impending Ice Storm Could Impact Pittsburgh Area

PITTSBURGH, PA — The National Weather Service says it is increasingly likely the Pittsburgh area could see a period of freezing rain and ice accumulations Wednesday into Thursday.

The latest forecast models show Pittsburgh with a chance of getting 0.1 inch of ice from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday.

Greater ice accumulations are possible north and east of the city. Winter storm watches are in effect for Butler, Armstrong, Indiana and portions of Westmoreland and Fayette counties from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. on Thursday. Significant icing is possible, with up to one quarter of an inch of ice along with an inch of snow possible.

The ice could impact Thursday morning's commute but not the evening rush hour. Warmer temperatures will move into the region Thursday, with near-record highs in the lower 60s. A chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible.
