PITTSBURGH, PA —As anticipation mounts over the impending opening of Pittsburgh International Airport's new terminal, many people likely are wondering: How do I get there? Where do I park?

The Allegheny County Airport Authority has answers to those questions.

The new $1.7 billion terminal, scheduled to open next month, promises to provide additional parking, shorter waits at security checkpoints and baggage claim, and outdoor plazas where people can relax before boarding their flights

It will replace the current Landside Terminal, which opened in 1992 and is plagued with antiquated
equipment and technology, frequent security checkpoint bottlenecks and an inconvenient layout. It will be directly connected to the Airside Terminal.

On its Blue Sky News website, the airport authority notes that there will be no significant changes in getting to the airport. The existing roadway off of the parkway will remain, and signage will clearly indicate how to get to the new new terminal.

What do you do once you approach the terminal? It depends on why you are there. The terminal and front bridge have three separate levels:

  • The top level is for departing passengers, where travelers can be dropped off and where airport shuttles from the existing parking lots will bring travelers directly to the doors.
  • The middle level is for arriving passengers to be picked up by friends, family and colleagues.
  • The ground level features access to taxis, rideshare services and regional transit.

A new parking garage within walking distance of the terminal will have 3,800 spaces and will have a fully covered walkway to the terminal. There also are new surface parking lots within walking distance of the terminal.

The airport's existing lots will remain in use with a larger shuttle bus fleet providing access to the terminal.

An official opening date for the new terminal is expected to be announced shortly. A recent open house drew 10,000 people to the building and 2,500 people participated in a trial run of the facility last week.
