A staunch progressive, Lee was first elected to Congress two years ago to succeed longtime Rep. Mike Doyle, who retired. Hayes, a conservative businessman from Shadyside, is making his first bid for office.
Financially, Lee, 36, of Swissvale, had a huge edge over Hayes, having raised nearly $2.7 million in 2023-24 to his modest $86,000 during the same period. A much more known commodity than Haynes, Lee says she has helped to secure $1 billion in federal investments for Western Pennsylvania to improve infrastructure and transit and create thousands of union jobs.
