Balloon Release Ban To Be Proposed In PA

A state senator wants to enact a ban on the intentional release of balloons in Pennsylvania

PENNSYLVANIA —A state lawmaker says balloons pose significant environmental risks and plans to propose legislation that would prohibit intentionally releasing them into the air.

Sen. Amanda Cappelletti, a Delaware County Democrat, plans to introduce a bill that would ban the intentional release of balloons except for scientific or meteorological purposes if they are approved by relevant authorities.

"When released, these items often travel long distances before landing in various ecosystems, where they become hazardous litter. Balloons can take years to decompose and frequently pose dangers to wildlife, which may mistake them for food, leading to ingestion, entanglement, and often death," Cappelletti stated in a memo to colleagues.
