Penguins' Superstar Out Indefinitely, Placed On Injured Reserve

There's a gaping hole in the Penguins' lineup after one of the team's best players suffered a long-term injury.

PITTSBURGH, PA — One of the Penguins' all-time greats, Evengi Malkin, and forward Blake Lizotte are out indefinitely after being placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Malkin and Lizotte both have upper body injuries and their playing status is week-to-week, the team announced.

Malkin last played against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, recording two goals and an assist. Malkin, who is second on the Penguins with 29 points - eight goals and 21 assists in 26 games - did not play in the Penguins' missed the team's 3-2 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday.

"It's not easy to replace 'Geno.' Pretty much can't," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby told NHL.Com. "I think it's just by committee. He's been playing great hockey for us, so we're all going to have to step up and get some points here and play some good hockey until he's back."

To replace Malkin and Lizotte, the Penguins recalled forwards Danton Heinen and Sam Poulin were recalled from Wikes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
