Pittsburgh-Area District Postpones School Year Start After Threat

Students won't be in class today after a Pittsburgh-area school district received a significant threat.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A threat made to a Pittsburgh-area school district has resulted in a delay in the start of the new school year..

The Shaler Township Police Department said early Monday that it was alerted to a threat referencing "Shaler Scools." The Allegheny County police department and the Shaler police department are investigating the matter.

However, the district has postponed the first day of classes until Wednesday.

"We are deeply saddened to make this adjustment and do not take this decision lightly," school superintendent Bryan O'Black and Shaler police superintendent J. Sean Frank said in a joint statement.

"The safety and security of our students and staff remain our highest priority. The district is working closely with local law enforcement, who are actively investigating the situation. We will fully cooperate to ensure that the individual responsible is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.>We will continue to share updates with families as additional information becomes available."
