Pittsburgh-Area Man Shot By Police While In Custody

An officer shot a man during a fight with him in a Pittsburgh-area police department holding cell.

MUNHALL, PA — Allegheny County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting of a man early Monday while he was in a Munhall Police Department holding cell.

At 11:32 p.m., police arrested the 38-year-old man in the 100 block of E. 18th Avenue on domestic violence charges. He was taken to the police department and placed in the holding cell for processing.

At 12:39 a.m., officers observed the man attempting to cover the camera in the cell. Two officers entered the cell and ordered him to stop, but he refused commands and began to fight with them. During the fight, both officers used tasers, but the man continued fighting. One officer then fired multiple shots, striking the man in the torso.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. The officers were uninjured.

The county police homicide unit was requested and detectives have begun an investigation. The status of the officers involved in the incident will be determined by Munhall police.
