Pittsburgh-Area Man Wounded In Shootout With Police
Pittsburgh-area police and a suspected shoplifter exchanged gunfire early Sunday.
HOMESTEAD, PA — A man was wounded early Sunday after firing at police while attempting to elude them.
At 1:06 a.m., police were notified of a shoplifting incident in the 200 block of East 8th Avenue. Responding officers encountered a man believed to be the suspect in the 800 block of Amity Street. When they attempted to stop him, he ran away.
Officers located the suspect a short time later in an alley near East Hazel Way. When they attempted to approach him, he shot at them. Officers returned fire, shooting him in the hand. No officers were wounded.

The suspect was taken into custody a short time later and taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was identified as Mitchell Johnson, 20, of Braddock.
Johnson faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer and carrying a firearm without a license.

The status of the officer involved in the incident will be determined by Homestead police.
