Pittsburgh-Area State Rep. Matt Gergely Dies

Gergely represented many communities in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pennsylvania State Rep. Matt Gergely, who had been hospitalized since December after suffering what was described as a medical emergency, died Sunday. He was 45.

The Pennsylvania House Democratic Committee announced his death in a statement Sunday night.

"Our hearts are broken as we mourn the untimely loss of our friend and colleague," the House Democratic leadership stated.

"Matt Gergely devoted his life to fighting for children and working families of Allegheny County – especially his beloved hometown of McKeesport. Matt will be desperately missed in Harrisburg and we know his passing is a tremendous loss to his communities in Western Pennsylvania. Please join us in keeping his wife and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time."

Gergely represented the 35th Legislative District near Pittsburgh, which includes the Mon Valley communities of Clairton, Duquesne, McKeeseport, Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, Versailles, West Homestead, Whitaker, White Oak and a portion of West Mifflin. He had represented the district since 2023.

Lt. Gov. Austin Davis released the following statement on Gergely's death:

“Rep. Gergely dedicated his entire life to public service. I witnessed his service first hand as a McKeesport school official, city administrator and finally as a state representative. He was a tireless champion for working families in the Mon Valley. My heart goes out to his wife, Holly, his family, friends and community. The Second Lady and I are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Gov. Josh Shapiro on Monday ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff in Gergely's honor until sunset on the date of interment.

A special election to fill Gergely's seat will be called by House Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Philadelphia, at a later date.
