Pittsburgh Cold Snap: Forecasters Weigh In On How Long It Will Last

Pittsburgh has been plagued with below-average temperatures all month. Here are predictions as to when a warmup might occur.

PITTSBURGH, PA — If you're longing for warmer weather during a January that thus far has been a frigid one in Western Pennsylvania, you're likely to be disappointed by this news: Forecasters are predicting the cold snap will mostly linger for the rest of the month.

While a brief reprieve will occur this weekend when temperatures could actually climb above freezing, the National Weather Service predicts there is an 80-to-90 percent chance of below average temperatures from Jan. 19-23 and a 75-to-80 percent chance of colder than average temperatures from Jan. 21-27.

State College-based AccuWeather expects temperatures will climb into the lower 40s by Saturday before the plunge back into frigid territory. The high temperature for Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 20 is expected to be 17, with an anticipated high of only 15 on Jan. 21. The next day with temperatures above freezing is expected to be Jan. 26, with an expected high of 33.
