Pittsburgh Neighborhood Supermarket Closing Its Doors
The imminent closure of a Pittsburgh neighborhood grocery store has been announced.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Just a year after it opened, the future of the Hill District's only grocery store is murky after an announcement Wednesday that it is "pausing operations."
Salem's Market, which occupied the Centre Avenue space vacated years before by Shop 'n Save, will be closing, at least temporarily. The closure was announced by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, which provided a loan to help get the supermarket up and running.
"In our partnership with Salem's Market and Grill and the City of Pittsburgh we’ve learned that it’s not the right time for a full-service grocery store to be supported," a post on the authority's Facebook page stated.

"We know community members are disappointed by the news of the store pausing its operations, and we share those feelings. The URA is committed to supporting Salem's during this transition as they identify next steps for the future of the Hill District location. Our team is simultaneously considering the community’s needs and will continue to work with partners to seek opportunities for inclusive economic growth in the neighborhood."
A specific closing date for the store was not provided. Salem's other locations in the Strip District and Oakland will remain open.
