Pittsburgh Parkway To Completely Close Temporarily

A Pittsburgh parkway will close entirely for more than a day. Patch provides the details.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A full closure of a major Pittsburgh roadway will occur this weekend.

PennDOT has announced the Parkway East will be closed between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange from 9 p.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday as crews demolish and replace an overhead sign structure.

The work is part of the Commercial Street Bridge replacement that will use accelerated bridge construction techniques to laterally slide a new bridge onto the existing alignment of the parkway. The bridge currently is under construction below the road in Frick Park.

The $95 million project will be one the largest lateral slide projects ever performed in Pennsylvania.

The bridge project is an extensive one that will significantly impact thousands of motorists for more than a year. In 2025, nine overnight full closures and detours of the eastbound parkway, a full weekend closure and detour of the highway in each direction, and 35 extended weeknight single-lane restrictions on eastbound I-376 will occur.

It will get worse next year. Expect a 25-day full closure and detour of the parkway as the new bridge is installed.

This weekend, traffic will be detoured as follows:

Westbound traffic:

· From westbound I-376, take the Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B) interchange

· Continue onto Route 8 (Ardmore Boulevard)

· Bear left to continue on Route 8 (Penn Avenue)

· Turn left onto Fifth Avenue

· Bear left onto the ramp toward westbound I-376 to the Boulevard of the Allies

· From the Boulevard of the Allies (Route 885) take the ramp to West 376 toward Downtown

· End detour

Eastbound traffic:

· From eastbound I-376, take the Forbes Avenue/Oakland (Exit 72A) exit

· Continue straight onto Forbes Avenue

· Turn left onto Bellefield Avenue

· Turn right onto Fifth Avenue

· Turn right onto Penn Avenue

· Bear right onto Route 8 (Ardmore Boulevard)

· Take the ramp to I-376/Pittsburgh/Monroeville

· Stay right onto the ramp to eastbound I-376

· End detour

Police will assist motorists near major intersections along the detour.

The Squirrel Hill-Homestead (Exit 74) interchange will remain open to use. Motorists traveling on westbound I-376 will be able to access the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange although traffic will be down to a single lane.

To avoid extensive delays on the posted detour, PennDOT suggests motorists consider alternate routes in area, such as Route 837 and Route 28.
