Pittsburgh Secures $1.7M For Traffic, Pedestrian Safety Improvements
State agencies are providing Pittsburgh with $1.7 for various traffic signal upgrades and pedestrian improvements.
PITTSBURGH, PA — The city has obtained $1.7 million from three state agencies for various project that will be used for various traffic and pedestrian safety projects. The money is coming from the Department of Community and Economic Development and PennDOT.
“This funding is a direct reflection of our commitment to building safe, connected communities throughout Pittsburgh,” Mayor Ed Gainey said in a statement. “Gov. Shapiro understands the importance of investing in our infrastructure to ensure our neighborhoods are safe and accessible, and we are thrilled to see these vital projects come to life.”
PennDOT is providing $647,050 to modernize the traffic signal at the intersection of East General Robinson and Sandusky streets on the North Shore. City officials say the upgrade will make the area safer and more walkable, enhancing the overall urban experience.

PennDOT also will provide $335,982 for a new traffic signal at Centre Avenue and North Dithridge Street in North Oakland. Located near the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University campuses, the improvement should help manage traffic flow and improve safety for students, faculty and residents.
The Department of Community and Economic Development is funding $450,000 for lighting on Penn Avenue in East Liberty that should improve visibility and enhance safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

The department also will provide $250,000 for the Smallman Complete Street Project, which city officials contend will transform Smallman Street in the Strip District into a safer and more efficient corridor.
