MONROEVILLE, PA — Walmart is the purchaser of Monroeville Mall, whose future is up in the air as the major retailer mulls redevelopment opportunities at the 186-acre property.

CBL Properties disclosed last week it had sold the mall for $34 million and that Dallas-based Cypress Equities would be managing the property for the new owner. It was not revealed until Monday that Walmart had bought the mall.

While no final decision has been made as to whether a Walmart will be going into the site, the retailer has no presence in Monroeville's densely-populated retail corridor. The nearest Walmart is in North Versailles, about five miles from the site.

A Cypress official told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that all redevelopment options are on the table, including a partial or complete demolition of the mall, which opened in 1969.

Cypress said in a release on Monday that it plans to lead the efforts to re-imagine Monroeville Mall into a new retail and commercial destination."

"The property is well suited for a major redevelopment and repositioning into a mix of uses including retail and entertainment, restaurants, residential, hospitality, office, and public spaces," Cypress said in the statement.

The property consists of the main mall, The Annex at Monroeville, The District at Monroeville and outparcels Best Buy and Firestone.

The mall has 1.2 million square feet of retail space. Its anchors are Macy's, JCPenney, Dick's Warehouse, Full Throttle Adrenaline Park, Dick's Sporting Goods and Cinemark.
